Course outline
The purpose of this course is to develop competency in the utlization of online collaborative writing and reading tools as a way to prepare students for the new literacy challenges of the 21st Century. The focus of the class will be on writing, and it will include not only the traditional journalism methods of writing and reporting, but also the decentralized information-gathering and reporting done via blogs and other read/write web tools. Students will write in a variety of modes, including the use of blogs, collaborative wikis, shared documents, and online publishing. In connection with the writing, students will read, research, and evaluate numerous online resources, including blogs and other regularly updated sites via RSS feeds, tagging, and bookmarking.

Objectives for the class
In this course, students will...
...examine what news is and what makes something newsorthy
...set up a personal blog that contains links and a central clearinghouse for their thoughts and ideas on their topics
...write regular blog postings about their chosen topics and how they relate to the BHS community
...connect themselves to other parts of the world via the internet, either by hyperlinks in blogs, leaving comments on others' works, reaching out to other students reading or experiencing similar texts
...read from a variety of "news" sources and blog regularly about what they are reading
...write about important issues of the day and help explain the relevance of those issues to the world of Branford High School and Branford
...use a variety of personal productivity tools to share their work, maximize their learning, and organize their ideas
...collaborate with classmates and others on a writing-based project
